Quick question:

I have the Salome-Meca 2009 package installed on my ubuntu computer here at work (thanks to all who got me here!).

Is this new version just a LiveCD version of what I already have, or is it upgraded in any way? Does it need to run as a LiveCD, or is it something I can install on top of my 9.04 Jaunty installation?

Thanks!

caelinux 2009 contains salome-meca 2009, but with a big difference: salome meca stand-alone is 32bit, while caelinux2009 contains a 64bit version of aster.
There are other softwares more on caelinux, taht you don't have on the salome-meca stand alone package.

You can install caelinux 2009 to your hard disk, but not on Ubuntu 9.04, you must do it on a separate partition, and you will have a dual-boot system.

I was able to create another user in CAELinux 64. What I have tried of the suite of software, worked fine, never better, actually. I think that 64-bit is the way to go. Booting CEALinux 64, I had 800mb more memory to work with.

In one test, I pushed it into VM, by 1GB or so, and Aster completed the task. I also had something running that used about 6GB, and my system having only 4GB of physical RAM, 3.8 available, which meant the in was using VM for the rest, which died with a <f> error, perhaps timing out after 1600 seconds, which is ~26 minutes. More RAM might fix that.

[Currently, I am using a Thinkpad T61P, w/4GB of memory - 2.2GHz, Core 2 Dual. Note: some older Intel Dual-Cores are 32 bit-only. I have heard that the T61P can actually use 8GB of memory, but because of the price of that RAM, the money might be better spent toward a Quad. My poor machine, what I have put it through : ( ]

Once again, thank you. I really appreciate all the effort that went into making this happen : )

Hello Joel,

Thank you very, very much for the wonderful CAELinux2009 release! I am thrilled that you chose Ubuntu LTS 8.04 as a the platform. Even more thrilled that it is 64 bit. And absolutely delighted that you included OpenMP in CodeAster!

I have installed it on a fresh Hard Drive of an Intel quad-core PC with 4GB RAM and am testing it. Here are some preliminary observations:

1. Typing a user name during the 7 steps to installing on one's hard drive is completely ignored and only the user "caelinux" is created. This is a minor hurdle for me as I have several PCs in a LAN where I have a common UID/GID ("1000:1000") that is used up by the default "caelinux" of this distribution.

2. The ASTK configuration uses "gedit" as the text editor. By replacing it with "nedit" I have made the "Editor Output" & "Editor Error" features of the ASJOB window work. Without these configuration changes these two capabilities are dis-functional.

So far my testing of this distribution is very very limited, but I am impressed by the work you have put in and the amazing compilation of CAE software you have included! Kudos and congratulations on a job exceedingly well done! Too bad we could not meet earlier this year in Paris. Hope we can meet at another CodeAster event in the near future.

Regards,
JMB

great release, I'll have to try it out on one of our 64bit workstations.

Since the shift to 64-bit is rather significant, I was wondering if you could make a change on the Download page. Simply change the titles on the Stable Versions page to "CAELinux 2009 - 64bit", and "CAELinux 2008 - 32bit", etc. A seemingly minor change, but I suspect it may eliminate some confusion from new users. I have recommended CAELinux to a number of academic colleagues working on smaller projects amenable to their 32bit systems, and wouldn't want to see them put off by initial confusion.

Hi Joel,

will it be safe to upgrade CAELINUX to Ubuntu 10.04?

Best regards
