The CAELinux 64 release slipped by me. I was poindering how to get the fortitude to suggest on the forums to focus on 64-bit versions, now this morning I see this.

I've tried in the last week to figure out how to get Salome and Aster 64 installed on the same system.

[What I have noticed that it comes down memory--especially in meshing. Even with only 4GB of RAM, the extra 1/2 gig will help until the a Phenom II Quad with 8GB calls me towards its pricey, yet reasonable shores : )

Thank You !!!!!

Thank You : )

Is there a way that the CAELinux installation be used for as a normal Linux distribution, as in be able to create user accounts, and such?

I really appreciate all the effort that herding all these engineering cats in one place, but it breaks my heart, and fills my head with wonder why try to force the users to all use a single account login?

When you first tried Ubuntu, would not it have been strange to have to log in as markshuttleworth? Would it have made you feel secure? I am not saying that you are doing anything unscrupulous, but these are our computers.

I have low-tech, but nether-the-less trade-secret documents on the my computer. I cannot give anyone a login to my computer--even Mark Shuttleworth. Using the same login name as anyone else sends a chill up my spine.

As Linux gains in popularity, that the engineering software will eventually be expected to fit into some modular, updatabable packaging scheme, and directory structure, whereas now most of it does not yet:

apt-get install salome-meca
2.3GB space will be required to install salome-meca
downloading...
installing salome
installing code-aster
installing tetgen
installing netgen
installing code-sauturn
installing java-foil
installing openfoam
executing triggers....
done.

apt-get update
(1) update found netgen 4.x.x
installing netgen 4.x.x
done.

~

Just looking at the menus, CAELinux has some software that I have not even seen yet.

There's a great collection of software in CAELinux, but is the product of all of your hard work and effort to be relegated to a single purpose-machine that never touches the internet?

Hi Brenda,

Long question, long answers:

Question 1.
CAELinux is a normal Ubuntu distribution 8.04 produced by remastering a liveDVD with the "magic" Remastersys tool.. there is nothing really particular on the side of the OS and thus it behaves like any other Ubuntu installation.

The only limitation is that the user customization is not taken into account during install, but you can add / modify users after install.

Did you try to create a new account after installation?? Probably not, so here is the procedure:
- install caelinux,
- login as "caelinux",
- in administration menu => manage users/groups
- create a new user .. named "MarkShuttleworth" if you want ;-) and change the default "caelinux" password to something a bit less obvious!
- login as "MarkShuttleworth" (or any other "better choice") and that's it!

I have spent some time writing scripts and customizing .bashrc to reconfigure & run properly all apps for all users... if this is not the case, you discovered a bug and it would be nice to report it!

I hope that it will convince you that CAELinux is a just like any other distribution.

Question 2:

yes, ready to install packages is the way to go... but it already exist in the form of Salome-Meca (tar.gz) and OpenFOAM binaries. These packages are made distribution independent (not .deb or .rpm) to save time and efforts: developing a package for such complex codes requires a lot of efforts and installing such codes is not a simple "copy and link" task. For example, Code-Aster is a client / server application that requires either an SSH server with "no password" authentication or RSH (not good for security !!). Copying Aster binaries would not be difficult, but automating all the "fine tuning" of the installation would be more tricky. To achieve a resonable integration of all codes in CAELinux, I had to carefully change the environment and create specific scripts to ensure that each app uses the right library versions / configuration parameter and so on. Controlling things at this level of detail is difficult to achieve in .deb packages, at least, with my little experience of it.

But YES, I agree, in the future, this would be the ideal case... just need to have enough time and find technical solution to do it!!

By the way, if anybody here has a strong experience in Ubuntu/Debian packaging... I would really appreciate some help !

Amazing software package, I'm glad that Ubuntu was chosen for the new distro - hopefully I can get deep enough into the software that I need 64-bit power!

It's awesome that all of these software packages can be tied together... and given away for free! Hopefully some more schools take the approach that the majority of their students will not end up at ford or GE with huge software budgets, and teach them on a software package that won't need to be stolen after graduation.

Expensive software looks great, but why lock yourself into a mercedes when a bike will still get you to work?

Code Aster is not as a bike! Code-Aster is like an AirBus, very difficult to drive but really really powerfull!!!!

Quick question:

I have the Salome-Meca 2009 package installed on my ubuntu computer here at work (thanks to all who got me here!).

Is this new version just a LiveCD version of what I already have, or is it upgraded in any way? Does it need to run as a LiveCD, or is it something I can install on top of my 9.04 Jaunty installation?

Thanks!
