For those who can't wait,
the best way is to download Mandrake 10.1 binary version and to use default config file (no need to specify). Then just disable installation of GCC 3.4.. and that's all!!
This version is really a big improvement compared to 2.8 and it is by far more stable too...
Next release of CAELinux will be mainly an update with Salome 3.2.1, Aster 8.3 and some additions like BRL-Cad. Release is expected within the next month.

For me it worked installing the Mandrake binary inside the VMware player (!!)
I then have (from a shell) to source env_products.sh and then launch salome..
Seeing it this way the VMware player is really impressive... I didn't suspect it could be possible to add programs...

Yes, you are right VMWare is overall a really impressive product. With the VMWare image you can do everything that you could do with a real dedicated HDD install !!
I am even using it to remaster new version of the CAELinux DVD!!
