Dear all
'Linux is free for those who's time is worthless':
Does this mean that you have never had problems with that 'other' OS? I have spend more time searching for solutions for problems on that 'other' OS than I ever have used on Linux (mainly Ubuntu), including searching for lost references, libraries, header files, and you name it. Of course it is not perfect, but after the learning curve I find it easier to use and much better documented than that ....
But maybe I should not have post this.
kind regards - kees

Yes I have - but I've been so lucky as to not having to use Windows for many many years on my own computer, I've still had it installed for playing games during holidays and what not - so I haven't had to put up with the retarded errors it spouts out.
I am however, against people who glorify Linux (nobody on this forum does that though) and feel it is way superior to Windows. Sometimes it would be nice to just install ONE program that does it all, instead of having to use a long tool chain to get things done. CAD modelling software -> Salome(pre-processing/mesh) -> Code_ASTER (astk/eficas) -> Salome (postprocessing). And that's the short version and just an example. I've lost hours and hours getting this to work initially, even when if I am a Linux power user. That gets frustrating. It makes you yearn for Pro/E with Mechanica (just to give an example)
Then again, when I used Pro/E, I couldn't use it for days because I was waiting for the license file to arrive, and if I messed something up, there was no other choice but to clean and reinstall the whole thing. And forget about exchanging model-data with different versions of Pro/E - they'll put a stop to that unless you pay for identical versions etc. etc. etc.
Dependency Hell® ended pretty much with Debians 'dpkg' system - even better when using Ubuntus repositories that are very much up to date. Using Slackware 7 or Redhat 4.2 was pure hell back then. I've yet to have any dependency problems using Ubuntu.
When comparing Windows to Linux, it is very hard to get around the fact that you could build a HPC running ISO-certified FEA/CFD for only the hardware cost - IF you have the time and knowhow.
Windows has nothing on Linux in regards to scientific computing, but for plain ol' desktop users, some things just work better out of the box.
