Salome crushes after running geom module was created by k_zurawski
Hi,
I installed ubuntu 9.10 on my old laptop equipped with Ati Radeon x600 card. After Running salome-meca2009.1 I've noticed a problem regarding refreshing of the viewport. My first guess was a missing driver and 3d accelerator. I googled for it and found fglrx driver. I went to synaptic and installed the following:
xorg-driver-fglrx-dev 2:8.660-0ubuntu4
fglrx-kernel-source 2:8.660-0ubuntu4
xorg-driver-fglrx 2:8.660-0ubuntu4
fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.660-0ubuntu4
After restart ubuntu worked fine, but salome after turning on geometry, mesh or post modules crushes returning in terminal:
>>> SALOME_Session_Server: ../../src/xcb_io.c:542: _XRead: Assertion `dpy->xcb->reply_data != ((void *)0)' failed.
I checked if the problem was due to this installation (basically I uninstalled the mentioned packages). After that salome worked fine, but the problem with refreshing returned.
Anybody has x600 and the 'driver - salome problem'?
I did nothing except installing the packages, maybe I must configure it in some way? Turn something on, or so?
Please help.

Post edited by: k_zurawski, at: 2010/03/19 00:25

Browsing the ubuntu forums I have noticed there seems to be a preference for Nvidia. I had all kinds of problems with graphics drivers until I used a proprietary driver from Nvidia's website. ATI might offer something similar.

What's VERY ANNOYING is that I find list of dependences after dependences, after dependences in Linux. In my opinion that's the main problem of Linux popularity. Nothing is simple. When I finally spend those 2 days solving problems with graphics something else shows malfunction.
I only want to use the software, not spend most of my free time trying to make it work! Imagine installing OpenOffice every time You want to write something. That's stupid and unfortunately I feel like doing this since I put dvd with ubuntu to the drive...

Yeah, using Linux can be a bitch sometimes, however, using either Synaptic or 'apt-get' to install programs will take you a long way when we're talking about dependencies. Then again, I can't believe the shit windows users have to put up with - reboots, having to update programs individually, only being able to customize 1% of what you can customize in Linux, viruses and trojans; having to have anti-virus and firewall programs eating up resources etc. etc. Each OS choice comes with a set of drawbacks, downsides and shortcomings.
Most problems you encounter with Linux has already been solved by someone else; search google with whatever error message you get, and the answer will pop up in one of the first search results.

Yes, You are right. Linux is great platform for people with "greater needs". I am a consumer and I am not ashamed of it. It would be great for me if ubuntu could reach level of "windows" simplicity but with the same level of "customizability" (which it has right now) for professional users.
That's only my opinion, I'm just a mechanical engineer...

Post edited by: k_zurawski, at: 2010/03/23 18:57

Yes, I too spend too much time fiddling with stuff, installing and general messing around, instead of Getting Things Done™. Linux could certainly use some corporate backing in the applications department.
Then again, corporations that spend thousands of €s on applications doesn't care what OS they run, but for us private citizens Linux has a god damn plethora of free applications, at the cost of set-up time.
'Linux is free for those who's time is worthless'
In any event, Linux is getting there, and you can always post your questions here or elsewhere.
