Internationalization

thank you for your highly appreciated suggestions. I have to agree that the communication is not optimal yet, probably because all of us are too busy to take the time to organise something simple but efficient to federate the translation efforts.

But things are moving: The Never created the codeaster-intl project at source forge, and extracted the hardcopied strings from Eficas with gettext, the strings have been translated by hand by JMB (and through Systran by myself) and are now being integrated in a first english release of Eficas.

In the meantime, JMB collected all the PDF files from Code-Aster website and converted them in HTML. He gave me a copy of these files and I found a far friend who translated all these HTML files with Systran. These HTML files are now included in CAELinux beta 3a (I developed also a search engine in a hurry) and i will be released as soon as I can on this website.

Then we will need to move further, starting from these PDFs & translated HTML files and possibly some MS Word \".DOC\" from Code-Aster team to create a set of good quality documents.

I have to say that I am very busy at the moment, that's why things are not moving exactly how I would like to.
What I could try to do is to setup a Wiki on CAELinux, so all willing contributors & possible organizers could create a collaborative content easily. I can supply the platform for the discussion & coordination but I have not enough time to organize this work-- unfortunately...

Next actions from my side:
I will try to find some time to setup a Wiki with protected write access (one password for all, available on request by email), and will upload all the files that I have now.

a wiki site for the code-aster translation would be great. With a few pages it should be possible to explain to volunteer translators how to organise their work.
If it is possible for helpers to download initial files and to upload translated documents you've already got that convenient one-stop-shop.

I imagine that the list of downloadable files also contains additional columns:
for priority,
one for \"progress\",
one for the uploaded file and maybe
one for the name (pseudonym) of the translator who is working on a document and
one more column for the estimated finishing date and
one for the last modified entry date.

So the translators can enter the status of their docs themselves.

It might also be wise to publish a downloadable template file so that all translated docs look alike. Maybe using doc or preferably odf format (no license cost to volunteers:).

It could also be helpful to publish a downloadable English-French dictionary of relevant technical terms maybe similar to that used in the systran translation software. This could be in xls or better ods format

If you could tell me where to find some documentation on how to work with your intended wiki I would help to set up some of those wiki-pages with organisational info for volunteer translators. And I would try to motivate my friends to help translate. And try to find more friends;)

What about the license under which the final docs will be put? Some open document license?

the Wiki is up and running now !!

This Wiki is free to read, but requires an account to edit the pages. Account creation is free and not regulated.

I have tried to create an initial structure for the site, so please try to respect it:
there are 2 general sections (called namespace in Wiki)
1) Documentation section (pages named like Doc:MyDoc)
2) Projects section (pages named like Proj:MyProject)

Concerning the internationalization:
- the finalized documentation should be referenced in Documentation section under the \"Doc:Trans\" page
- the translation projects (collaborative work) & preliminary documents should be referenced in the Project section in \"Proj:CodeAsterIntl\" page for Code-Aster

Additionnally, for all of you deiscovering the page editing in Wiki, please practice in the Sandbox section and try to read the help pages before modifying any page of the site.

As I mentionned earlier, I will not be able to manage the translation projects, but I hope that some of you will take the lead and that this collaborative Wiki will serve as an efficient platform for the development of this project!!

So now it's your turn to make the things move !!
