This is something I can help with. I suggest that you pass such work over so that you can focus on parts which require technical expertiese or a knowledge of french!

I agree that using gettext would be a better option for the long term.

The Never,

There are possibly close to 200 docs that need to be translated. But progress seems to be slow because I don't seem to get the COde-Aster development team's responses quickly enough. Perhaps if more of us made them aware of our attempts to help, it might get a higher priority. I am still waiting to hear from the team about the document I submitted, and for more MS Word format french documents that I am willing to translate.

Re:

@ JMB - I saw the translation on the site, in the pending status I do believe.
I don't have the docs in either format, though I am curious about something. Exactly how many doc's
are left that need translations. ( Please no one bite my head off for not knowing, I haven't gone
through every little thing about CA yet)

@Anyone Who Cares

Figured I'd update.

This past weekend my workstation monitor lost it's horizontal drive. Trying to get schematics for it to repair it, until then though, I've ordered a replacement that should be in by the end of the week. How does this matter though? Simply, I'm lazy and did not upload the current version to my internal CVS. My spare monitor is loaned out, and there is no way I'm pulling the monitor in the server closet out. Too hard to get in and out!

Anyway, for public CVS or SVN access I submitted the project to Sourceforge. Currently, I'm waiting on that to (hopefully anyway) be accepted. Due to this, I'm working on getting a site together using my laptop.
I know... I know, I'm a bum. B)

It seems though, that due to the number of minor changes (adding gettext to the strings) that using a version control solution, and giving the few contributors access would be the easiest thing to do. Emailing things around is tedious. Further, it would make it easier for someone to download the current \"build\" of the translation.

@Venkat

Will pass it along soon... hopefully the Sourceforge will come through and I can point you to CVS/SVN.

@JMB

Man oh man, that is a lot of documentation. No matter, it's just effort after all. ;-)

What kind of responses are you waiting on? Approval for the document you've done or something else?

@Everyone

I'm trying to get some companies that I've worked with and am currently supporting to contribute something (hosting, manpower, just something worthwhile). Alas, none of them are currently interested. I feel this is due to the projects *small* community (not much advertising for the sponsorship/donation as it were) and they don't currently need this software.

Not to steal thunder from this site, but things are starting to come together now that Sourceforge has approved hosting.

Hi,

that's great news !! I wish I could spend some time on the subject, but to be honnest, it's pretty impossible for me now.

I wish you a lot of success, and encourages everybody who likes Code-Aster (and knows a little bit of french) to participate to this project.

I hope this will help the progress of the community!!

Good luck.

PS: you could post this news on Code-Aster forums, and repeat your call for contributions !!

PS2: there will be 4 new tutorials in french & english on this site in a few days, and all of them are kind contributions of motivated people !!

Jason,

Sorry to tell you this, but is a lot more than I thought. There are more than 900 French documents for Code-Aster! So the admin (of this website) and I have worked on getting all the PDF files, auto-converting them to HTML format, auto-translating them from French HTML to English HTML files using a corporate edition of Systran (thanks to admin's connections). The downside is the formulas & figurea and a lot of formatting gets clobbered, but the text is essentially readable. I use two windows side by side to read, one the original French PDF and the other the English HTML in a browser.

I think, the admin is waiting on getting some kind of green-light from the Code-Aster team. Please ask him directly.

Regards
JMB

PS: If you have an email I can contact you directly at, we can do so, where I can drop the psuedonym I am using here. I keep my real name hidden here to prevent identity proliferation.
