US based folks may want to check out Cubit (cubit.sandia.gov). This front-end can export STEP files that appear to be readable with Salome. (It's also a very capable mesher!). This prog used to be free, but I think Sandia now charges a $300 US 'distribution fee\". Yes, I know it's binary-only, proprietary software, but it could be a reasonably priced solution.

BRL-CAD seems complete, self-contained, and probably has the biggest budget behind it of any open source CAD program. Add it?
