New packages: feedback needed was created by Joël Cugnoni
Dear CAELinux community,
as you all probably know, distribution of large ISO or VMware images on the web requires a lot of resources from both the server an client side. To help people having problems downloading or burning the files, I am currently investigating some alternative distribution methods, which will be not completely free, but offered at a reasonnable price.
This will also be an opportunity for me to start covering the costs of my web hosting and maybe also to finance a new download mirror with anonymous FTP and unlimited bandwidth.
For those who might be anxious, the main distribution method will remain free downloads, so do not worry.
At the moment, these are only some possibilities that I have allready prototyped but I would like to have your feedback before jumping into this as it can cost me some precious time and money to develop these alternatives.
CAELinux on DVD
The first option would be to distribute CAELinux (both LiveDVD and VMWare version) on DVDs: order/payment through Paypal and sent to you by post with a small \"how to start\" manual. A DVD containing both the LiveDVD and the VMWare version could be proposed for approx. 30$ (world wide delivery included).
CAELinux Mobile USB Flash disk
The second option is totally different and does not replace the other options, but it offers a really \"cool\" way of running CAELinux: booting CAELinux straight from a USB Key!!
So you can keep your OS, your FEA apps & anaylsis results in your pocket... a dream-come-true!!
With the actual price of 4GB USB keys, this could be proposed at a price around 80$ (with the DVD version and world wide delivery included).
The big difference, for me, is the cost of the USB keys! So it will have to be pre-ordered until I reach a reasonnable number of pre-orders to start the \"production\".
FEEDBACK?
So now, what do you think about these options?
Are you interested in such packages?
What about the price?
(remember that CAELinux development is still a free-personal-unsponsored initiative...)
Other ideas or special needs?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Both sound like good options to me. Being able to use this software right now is enabling me to avoid/delay buying a commercial package at $$$$$, so paying $80 for the flash drive or $30 for a DVD is not a big deal.
Thanks

Hi Joel,
I don't now at this moment if I would use Your \"commercial\" offer. May be not, as long my hardware and my knowledge is sufficient to create the CAELinux OS by myself.
But I think that it is very OK and very welcome for many users
to have such a commercial offer which is still for a very low price. The idea of free software is not in danger by this. And I think that it is very justified that a person who since years does such a big and appreciated work does get not only thanks and honours but also a small part recompensed in form of money. I wish You success and usefulness to all users!
regards, Johannes

As a moderate newb, I'd definitely give consideration to the USB option. However, being past the point of 'absolute newb', I've gotten to the point where I can mess with things myself.
That said, I would be a bit concerned about how you'd handle support for the USB drives. I tried myself to get several flavors of linux to boot off USB (DSL, knoppix, etc.) and it never worked. Turned out to be something with my laptop and how it will (or won't) allow booting from USB. After a week of messing with things, wiping the key, starting again, etc., I just gave up.
So, I have a feeling you'll run into similar issues with people ordering one to 'jump right into things real easy' and having problems. Once they've shelled out cash, though, they're not going to be happy waiting on a reply to their forum post.
my 2 cents.

Suggestion: Stripped down, or \"Lite\", versions of the distribution.
Not sure how much this would affect things on your end, but I'm primarily referring to the VM versions, since the host OS would likely have most programs that you'd need for none core functions. I.e., office products, media players, etc. After installing the 3a VM version, first thing I did was go in the package manager and start removing a bunch of stuff. Trimmed off 1-2GB from the uncompressed VM. then ran the upgrades on everything left, which only added back

Hi all,
As we have received several emails asking for DVD copies,
we have decided to distribute DVD copies of CAELinux directly.
This new \"package\", called CAELinux DVD, includes both LiveDVD and VMWare on a single DVD bundled with all the other necessary tools to run it directly (VM player / Winrar etc..).
This DVD can be bought at the price of 20 euros with worldwide shipping included. All DVDs are tested before sending.
To order a DVD, you should use the paypal link provided on the download/order page:

I hope that you will enjoy this new option!!
