Yes, that is the complete mess file. Last night I had some success with a different tutorial (piston problem) that specified using the Aster icon within Salome-Meca. That worked great!
The difficulty I had with the included mess file was when I used the eficas, astk individual programs from the CAELinux menu. Also, when using these programs I always got a message that was something about specifying a server, etc. When I ran these programs from the USB stick, I was not connected directly to anything else. My connection would normally be DSL wireless, but I don't know how to set that up in Ubuntu Linux. You can see I am really a novice.

Since salome-meca works, it could be a specific astk problem.
Try running 'astk --check' and see if it complains about anything (you have to give a specific path to astk).
