Can you use this to do hydrodynamics simulations like:
-current, tides and temperatures along a coastline

Hi Frank,
I am not an expert in hydrodynamics, but here are some answers:
- Code_Aster does not include a CFD module for NS or other types of flow simulations.
- If your problems are diffusion-like and if you can create an analogous model based on an heat-transfer problem, you will be able to simulate this in Code_Aster.
- For sure, the GMSH & Salome 3D pre/post processor can help you for the model / mesh generation.
- In the next releases, I will also integrate several CFD solvers like OpenFOAM (this one might be usefull for you!), openFlower, fluxp and also the Paraview & mayaVi visualization tools (for VTK / Ensight formats).

So you can pick up the functionalities from here. I'm not an expert in hydrodynamics so I'm not picking up all the acronyms you said.
Basically, we would like to reproduce similar functionalities. usually we use a bathymetric model, use a couple of current meters/tide to calibrate the model, keep a couple for verification and run the model. Then we play with dispertion of various fluids, like waste (which disintegrate over time) or oil (which does not) and also play with sediment transport along beaches....

I have looked at the MIKE21 website and I think that it's very difficult to reproduce the features of this very specialized software with generic open-source packages.
To do so, you will need to have an excellent knownledge of all the equations / models used in the MIKE21 software to be able to create an identical solution with general simulation packages like Code_Aster or OpenFOAM (more suitable for your interest).
As you may be more interested in environmental sciences, you may also be interested by the POSEIDON Linux distribution that concentrates on scientific/GIS applications: poseidon.furg.br/

The simulation of free hydrodynamic surfaces (like ocean tides) is ideally suited for meshless algorithms like Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (or SPH). Have a look at the open-source Gadget-2 code.
