Build your own CAELinux distro ?? was created by Tommy Svartvatn
Is it possible or even practical to build your own system with the packages included in CAELinux 2013 on e.g. Ubuntu or Mint, just to work in a well known environment, and be able to continue on an optimized system? Are some applications linked to another in some way?

Anything is possible. I've never run CAELinux, but have most of the programs installed on various distributions over the years.
CAELinux is just bundling the programs and is not optimized in a special way that you couldn't achieve on any other system.
Where it shines, is the awesome scripts Jöel has included to make life easier for everyone - those scripts are available on the wiki for anyone to download.

There aren't as many here as I remembered:
caelinux.org/wiki/index.php/Proj:CAELinuxWizards2011
caelinux.org/wiki/index.php/Proj:HelpersTools
You can open caelinux in a virtual instance and extract the scripts that way. That will give you the bash settings for each application.

Thanks again Claws (good scratch...)
This just in, since this thread covers the OS;
OpenSuse? Is there any reason you're running that distro, and would it appeal to a computational mechanic?
Since CAELinux development is dormant currently, I'm on a prowl for an appropriate 'base' OS on which I plan to customize by including some CAELinux repo's. Too many inefficiencies on my Hybrid system (SSD + HHD) with switchable graphics.
Any ideas / pointers would be highly appreciated.

You're welcome.
I picked OpenSUSE because it seemed like a good stable distribution. Before that I used Ubuntu LTS, but was annoyed with the constant breakage almost every week, even with a long term support version.
OpenSUSE has been much more stable over the years.
I go for LTS distributions so all the new stuff dosen't break the stuff I use, so I think pretty much any distribution with a relatively large user base is OK for CAE stuff.
