Boot from LiveCD or Virtual machine is better?

Firstly great thank you to Joel for offering this CAELinux-distribution which I tried out and think it has the potential to really become competitive to commercial software!

My question now: In which way Code-Aster works faster: When booting CAELinux from Hard-Disk or when driving it with the virtual machine method? Can anyone estimate from his/her experience a factor of speed, also with respect to a normal Linux-distribution?

The same question do I have for Salome.

Best regards, Jo

Hi,

The fastest option is for sure an HDD install of CAELinux, then if you have 1Gb ram, it is the LiveDVD and finally, the VMWare version is the slowest.

But to be honest, for small models, I prefer to use VMWare version from inside Windows because I can update the geometry in CAD programs etc... But when the problem size increases, I use a native installation of CAELinux on HDD.

Dear sir,

I am also concerned this issue.

I have tried to install the VMWare version in PC, Pentinum 4 ,2.53GHz ,768MB RAM. but the cursor can not response quickly to follow mouse movement, is it possible due to bad Windows installation, or system performance slowdown, like virus attack ?

I plan to do stress analysis with model up to 20,000 quadratic tetrahedral elements, do you think it is a small size for the VMWare version ?

Also, the same model size shall be used to do Impact analysis,do you think it is good to use the VMWare version ?

Regarding to a native installation of CAELinux on HDD, can I download the code Aster from your website, or go to offical website ? and does it include Salome in the native installation ?

Some computer expert told me if one PC is installed with Windows and Linux together ,there shall be some system interference ? What is your viewpoint about this problem ?

Thanks

Evan

Hello,

for the type of analysis that you want to run and considering your machine specifications, a native installation of CAELinux is recommended. To install CAELinux in parallel of an existing Windows, you will need to do follow these steps:
1) BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT DATA (or even your full system)

2) make sure that you have approx 15GB free on your Windows partition (or make some free space)

3) Defragment your hard disk with the Windows utility

4) Boot from the CAELinux LiveDVD.

5) Run the \"Install\" wizard (shortcut on the desktop) and select these options:
a) select: \"install on normal disk (IDE)\"
b) select \"use free space on Windows partition\" (this will resize your windows partition to free some space for Linux partitions)
c) after the resize has been completed: restart your computer and boot once again on the liveDVD

6) Run the \"Install\" wizard once again and select these options:
a) select: \"install on normal disk (IDE)\"
b) select \"use existing partitions\" (this use the partitions created in the previous step)
c) click next to format the linux partitions and next to copy the files
d) select the \"GRUB with graphical menu\" bootloader
e) enter the new password for \"root\".

When it's done, you will be able to select either Windows or Linux when you start your computer. This is actually what I am using on all my computers.

Concerning interference, a real computer expert would have told you that it is possible and it works fine. The only risky part is the installation: if you make an error in the partitionning, you can loose ALL your data. Hopefully, the installation wizard in CAELinux does not let you do everything... but be carefull when you select the options: follow the above-mentionned steps!!
