Ubuntu auto updates - what is safe to accept? was created by Julian Smith
I just made the mistake of accepting the generous offer of an automatic upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu (12.04.2 LTS) - big mistake! Return to square one and complete reinstall follows!

But what is safe to accept in the upgrades offered by the Update Manager? I have now, with all extremities crossed, accepted everything offered short of the, previously fatal, "New Ubuntu Release" option and the system seems to be working OK. I also couldn't get my Geforce GTX 690 card to work properly with two screens until I applied those upgrades but now it seems OK.

Will I find problems in the future or should this have been safe?

Hoi Julian

upgrades are probably not wise to accept because your system might be not suitable anymore for CAELinux (depending on how far you are willing to you to solve the problem).
Update most likely are pretty wise to accept (for security reason being one of them).

Updates never caused me any problems, upgrades did (and in most cases these problems are solvable but somethings take some endurance).

Interest: structural mechanics, solar energy (picture at 'my location' shows too little pv panels)
