2010 beta installation was created by Matthew Bondy
I tried to install caelinux 2010 beta. The live DVD works well but when I install it I have some issues. Does it use grub legacy or grub 2? It seems grub does not install. I am trying to dual boot with Vista but even replacing the MS bootloader with grub (hoping it is grub 2) I cannot boot Ubuntu (when I try to use Grub as the primary bootloader I cannot boot anything).
I did go from Ubuntu 8.04 and grub legacy (MS bootloader primary chainloading grub using EasyBCD) to Grub 2 as primary bootloader with Fedora and Vista (MS bootloader still used to boot Vista). Then I used a Vista recovery cd to restore the original MS bootloader as primary (which actually brought back the EasyBCD 8.04/Vista MS bootloader). Initially I tried to install 10.04 with the bootloader in the / partition (I have C:, D: (Factory image), / and swap partitions). Then I used EasyBCD like before to chain bootloaders with the MS bootloader as primary.
I went on the Ubuntu forums and downloaded the boot info script and posted the results there. Helpful individuals pointed out that grub files are not there (or at best some files are there). I checked the md5sum of the iso file after download and it is the same as the md5 sum in the caelinux2010.pre directory.
Perhaps also helpful, I could not find Salome (or Salome-Meca) shortcuts when I used the live dvd. Should there be such a shortcut? I also have an error towards the end of the installation (not the installer itself).
Thank you in advance for any advice,

Thank you Matthew,
I am trying to find the cause of the Grub problem... it seem that the current Remastersys version is still a bit young to manage grub2 / grub legacy properly.
In the present ISO, grub2 should normally be installed (I tested it on my "linux only" machine, installing grub2 in the mbr). But it failed to generate a proper Grub2 config as I only had one single OS in the grub menu while 4 Linux distribs are actually installed on this machine. But at least I could boot the newly installed CAELinux 2010/Ubuntu10.04. Then, after running "sudo update-grub", I got a new and correct grub2 configurations... strange, because I am pretty sure that remastersys/ubiquity uses the exact same update-grub command at the end of the installation process ?!?
When you say that you cannot boot any OS from the newly installed Grub, what does it mean exactly? You don't have right entries in the menu? The entries are present but gives you an error ?
I have always used a Grub in MBR until now, and I avoid using Vista so I don't have a machine to test Microsoft Bootloader & EasyBCD... so thanks for pointing this issue.
I will first try to fix the other issues with the included software and finally when the distrib will be ready I will come back to you for some additionnal testing if you have some time... It seems at least the the problem is really serious and that it will take some time to fix.
PS: at the moment there are no shortcuts / desktop customization and no auto-configuration / environment scripts as well...
Joël

I have yet to get Grub to work at all. When I put Grub in the MBR the computer would start with a black screen and no options (after the BIOS screen). Live media would still work properly. With Grub in the / partition and the Vista bootloader in the MBR see the Vista bootloader first and Vista will boot if selected but selecting the Linux entry either brings me to a Grub command prompt or to what used to be a list of kernels without any kernels to choose from (this depends on the EasyBCD settings used to create the Linux entry in the Vista bootloader).
I did suspect I would need to install Grub manually although upgrading through 'sudo update-grub' is an interesting idea. I was thinking of reinstalling grub in a similar manner but I was unsure of how to install it in the / partition and not in the MBR. Installing in the MBR might be fine, I had Grub 2 dual booting Vista and Fedora without problems. I only prefer the Vista bootloader in the MBR because EasyBCD makes editing the Vista bootloader very easy (once again my GUI reliance comes back to haunt me...)
I did find that a beta version of EasyBCD 2.0 (from the Neosmart forums) is probably necessary if Grub 2 is used.
I thought the DVD I burned might have an error so I made a new one at the slowest speed and ran some sort of analysis afterwards. The new DVD behaved the same as the old one.
I would be happy to do any testing you suggest now or in the future.
Thank you for the advice,
