[Solved] Installing redhat software was created by Matthew Bondy
I have been provided with a beta version of an industrial FEA package but it looks like it is intended for Redhat (file name contains the terms redhat and intel64). Can I install this in Ubuntu 8.04? The file is a gunzip archive. There is one file in the archive. By default Wine tries to run it (properties indicate x-executable MIME type).
Edit: It looks like it was just tested with Redhat. The file in the archive can be executed on its own, no installation needed. In retrospect this makes a lot of sense since this software works the same way in Windows. I had no idea there are 'executables' in Linux. I should have mentioned I was specifically given a Linux version of the software. The file provided does not have a .exe extension.
Best regards,

Code_Aster release : STA11.4 on OpenSUSE 12.3 64 bits - EDF/Intel version

Several packages are labelled with something 'Redhat' in them, usually because they only tested it on Redhat. What matters is the extension. If it's .rpm you need to convert it with the 'alien' tool. If it's .bin or something similar, it's a self-extracting archive and you should try to run it in a terminal instead. What's the full name of the file?
