CAELinux 2009: Working driver for ATI Radeon X1550 64 bit?

I am trying to install CAELinux 2009 64 bit on a QuadCore with the said ATI card. It only yields a screen resolution of 1280x960 with the VESA driver even though a 1600x1200 screen is attached (via an ordinary VGA connection). The fglrx driver provided by the CAELinux repository will result in a grinding halt (not 64 bit?), and any try to persuade the VESA driver to display a larger screen geometry yields a completely garbled X11 screen, so the display resolution is practically severely restricted.

Is there any solution to this problem?
