What exactly do you mean by "console"?
It is strange, gedit is normally available in any distribution with GNOME desktop. Anyway, you may always use other text editors available to you. For example, nano - it is very basic console editor, although should do what you need. There is always an option to install something that you miss in your system. Try to install gedit

If I understood it correctly, you are using CAELinux 2008 (32bit)?
This means that you are running a KDE desktop, not GNOME, so you don't have gedit installed by default.
Try to change the editor preference to kwrite which is the KDE equivalent of gedit.

Thank you for that Alexey and Admin!
I managed to change the /etc/hosts file according to www.salome-platform.org/forum/?groupid=1...thread=1425&st=0 , but my problem remains, -SalomeMeca does not start.
My /etc/hosts looks like this:
I have no idea what any of this means. Perhaps, the addresses are wrong (I just tried to copy exactly what it says in the thread mentioned above). Any suggestions?

Hello,
In a terminal window type:
[code:1]which gedit[/code:1]
It should show something like "/usr/bin/gedit". If you see nothing, then it is not installed in your PC. I found it missing from the latest version of CAELinux as well. To install it type:
[code:1]sudo aptitude install gedit[/code:1]
Hope this helps
