Joel,
I am having the same issue on a Dell 670 workstation with a Nvidia card running 64 bit CAE Linux 2009, I would like to try the modified file that you suggested but I cannot seem to change the file ( permission problem). I know that you mentioned the use of sudo for administrative tasks - how is that used ?
Thanks
Robin

As an update to the NVIDIA issue ( screen greying out etc) I re-installed NVIDIA drivers and followed instructions from
www.lucioalbenga.com/2008/04/25/hardy-heron-nvidia-drivers/
Driver location
www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_173.14.05.html
It seems to work a little better, but there are still some issues when post processing large models in Salome.

If you have an ATI or Nvidia card - here is another way to get the latest drivers -
1. Start the synaptic package manager and search for Envyng-gtk and install
2. Open a terminal and type sudo envyng -g
3. Follow the instructions for the nvidia or ATI card - the latest drivers will be installed

I updated the drivers (with fingers crosses!)using the envy tool but still have the same problem...
I used the line in the xorg.conf file with some success, but it detroyed the rest of my setting (compiz etc.)
I have ATI drivers, which is i guess the main problem....
if there are no new suggestions (aside from my suggestion of try to figure out what QCad is using, as it works just fine, and implement it into Salome...) then I guess my only recourse is grab a machine with nvidea drivers and reinstall...
