System freeze was created by Pierpaolo
Hi all,
it seems like Cae doesn't like me in the least
As my laptop ASUS A6T, on which CAE2007 was installed, fried for the second time, I decided to switch to Apple's Macbook. At the beginning I kept a partition with mac osx (to sync my ipod touch) and used the other with Gentoo. On Gentoo I tried to use Salome MECA 2008 stand alone but both with tutorials and real cases I saved from old asus, I kept getting weird mesh display as though faces had outside and inside orientation. Being unable to solve the problem (related to Gentoo I suppose) I installed CAE 2008 to replace Gentoo.
Again no luck!! It happens that as soon as the geometry window shows a solid the system freeze. It also happens when I try to run glxgears programs. Glxinfo reports direct rendering as "Yes".
Could anyone help me on this?
Thanks,
Pier

Did you install propietary driver for your graphic board? I'm running caelinux on a pc AMILO fujitsu-siemens (ATI X700M graphic board), and I didn't experienced any problem. Your macbook should have an intel video card, and it seems that it runs well on linux.
Try to update your caelinux to the latest updates given by pclinuxos, pass trough synaptic package manager and perform a complete update (the system will download around 5-600 mb of packages).
Regards.

Alessandro,
thanks for the quick reply.
I have found one "quick and dirty" workaround on this:
bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserve...eo-intel/+bug/177518
and this:
bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14937
At the moment I disabled the direct rendering in Xorg.conf and I can at least start again working (the graphics is not that slow though and glxgears, blender & co do not freeze the pc anymore) before getting down and applying the patch of the second link.
Now apart from audio (still mute), keyboard function keys (brightness and volume), the hassle of the [|\] and [<>] keys swapped on italian layout of the white macbook, the isight camera (all hitches already solved when using blessed Gentoo), and the annoying non existent audio kscd windows that keeps on popping up, I am almost ready.
Thanks,
Pier
