HARDWARE for SALOME and CODE-ASTER was created by giovanni
Hi,
I am going to buy a new PC to install SALOME + CODE-ASTER from live DVD.
I choose this hardware configuration:
CPU = AMD 64 bit (dual core) 4000 GHz
VIDEO = ATI RX700 integrated, RAM shared
RAM = 2 Gb
HD = 250 Gb
Anyone use this tipe of hardware with the LIVE DVD distribution installed?
Shall I buy more RAM? (4 Gb)
thanks a lot

Hello,
this seems fine but, if I can add something, I would really recommend a dedicated (not shared memory) NVidia graphic card, even if its an entry level 3D card.
The reason are:
1) Nvidia 3D driver are the most stable on Linux and they work very well with CAD/meshing application (fast acceleration of wire rendering.. which is not well supported by ATI)
2) integrated graphic cards suffer from low performance and you may have problems to have them properly detected & configured by the OS/drivers
So if you plan to use Salome with a reasonnable performance, it's better to invest a bit for an entry level Nvidia card like GeForce 7300 or better.
Concerning the RAM, 2Gb is usually enough (anyway as CAELinux is a 32bit Linux OS, applications cannot use more than 2Gb each...)
I hope that these advices will help you in buying your system.
Best regards,
J.Cugnoni
PS: if the graphic drivers bundled with CAELinux (in folder /opt/helpers/drivers) do not support your 3D card, just download & install the official ATI / Nvidia driver packages from their respective websites.
