shut down problems was created by Mariusz
Hi, Great Team,
I'm using CAE Linux in more and more extensive scope. Starting with LaTeX publications, Simple project in LibreCAD and FreeCAD aiming now at more productive fortran fem procedures. Salome and other CAE apps are still an ambitious challenge.
But one thing keeps annoying me: Form time to time when I try to shut down my Gigabyte laptop, it really does not power off itself. I must press the power button for a few seconds to power it off. On Ubuntu it works OK.
When installing CAE Linux there is no a defined moment to remove the installation stick - maybe this is the reason?
Nevertheless, CAE Linux is a great project - thanks.

Hello Mariusz,

Sorry for this problem. It it happening in a full installation or from a live USB stick?
If it is from a full installation, it is probably a service that takes too long to stop and the OS is waiting for it. You can have a look at the log during shutdown if you press the ESC key. It should display what is going on and show which service it is waiting for

Hello,

at least it is not a service that fails... but I am not sure what is causing the issue. It is most probably related to ACPI.

Here are some possible solutions that I have found doing a quick internet search:

-- From : askubuntu.com/questions/1073344/ubuntu-1...-and-occasionally-fr  --

Solution:
Open terminal
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Edit GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quite splash"
into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_idle.max_cstate=1"
Save and close it
sudo update-grub
Turn your computer off forcefully for one last time
-

Others suggest : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force"

See this long post for other solutions if this does not fix it
askubuntu.com/questions/1029068/ubuntu-18-04-stuck-at-shutdown

I hope it helps you fix this issue (but it remains quite safe to do a "hard power off" in that case, as all data has been written to disk at that stage)

Hello Joël ,
Thank you for the research you've made to solve this issue.
I've tried all options you've suggested and that found on Ask Ubuntu page. Unfortunately no option yielded satisfactory result.
The system powers off as it likes: sometimes it powers off completely (as I wish), sometimes it only leaves a message on the screen: power down and I press the power button for a few seconds to power the system off.
Regards,
Mariusz
