Upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04 was created by Saurabh
Hi,
I am new to Linux systems. I was wondering if upgrading Ubuntu from 18.04 to 20.04 or 22.04 can cause any problems in CAELinux 2020. Is it safe to do that?

I can't tell you if it's safe, or how to do it safely but in the "Getting started with CAELinux 2020", Section 2 "Getting started and installing CAELinux" subsection "Installation instructions" there is in the "Important Notes & recommendations" in the fourth point, the following:

"You can safely update the system packages but to avoid issues with the custom installed CAE software, do not attempt to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 or else. If you need more recent kernel or drivers, try installing ‘backported’ packages for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS or use appimage packages / other PPAs for more recent applications."

I hope, it helps you.

Thanks for replying, it is perfectly correct:

upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 or soon 22.04 will break some of the packages. You might need to reinstall fix some software by manually installing missing versions of library files (SalomeMeca) , or edit apt sources to get newer versions of some packages, for example of OpenFOAM.

However, the system in itself will be upgraded 'without problems' as any regular Ubuntu release.
