Font size

I tried changing the screen resolution from 1200x1920 which Ubuntu defaulted, to 1920x1200. This caused a hatch like display, I gather it has something to do with the signal patterns in the monitor.

But I can change the orientation of the display which does work.

But how do I decrease the resolution so fonts etc are larger?
