Ubuntu 14.04 was created by Stephen Kramer
Hello,

I am relatively new to linux... so I apologize for my ignorance but if I upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 (as prompted by 12.04) will everything installed by 2013 CAELinux still work correctly?

thanks!

Ok this was a bad idea...

After upgrading to 14.04 by following the instructions presented, I found that all of the CAELinux2013 applications were still available, but none of the terminal based programs would start, I could not open a terminal window of any kind by any method. Specifically a terminal window would flash briefly on the desktop but not long enough for me to see the text on it. On the task manager I could see the process start and the end quickly.

Actions taken:

Using Ubuntu software center, I uninstalled the Terminal Emulator. It gave a warning when doing this as if it was going to do more than just uninstall the emulator but I went ahead. Then I reinstalled the Terminal Emulator. What happened was a number of changes. First, the desktop appears to be zoomed in more based on the appearance of the background image. Neither the top or bottom toolbars are visible, as well as the desktop icons are not visible. Right clicking has no response on the desktop. Task manager was the only program open, and I was able to use the application search button to access the settings manager. I tried changing screen resolution as well as other display related settings. I could not launch xterm from the task manager either. I have also restarted the computer it seems to restart normally although I noticed some of the text during startup is now yellow, some notification about a disk drive not being available? It passed too fast to read.

So, my question is, what is the best way to re-install the original CAELinux2013 Ubuntu 12.04 version? Right now it is running on a hard drive partition next to Windows 7. Or does anyone happen to know what my issue might be or how to address it specifically?

thanks!

This is not a solution for your immediate situation.
On the general topic of upgrading CAELinux to 14.04, I want to say that there is a release 14.04.1 that appears to include a lot of fixes.
Has anyone tried to upgrade CAE to 14.04.1?
