You must be in the US (at least not Europe) like me. I think you have to change your "Region" to "EU West (Ireland)". You do this by using the drop down box on the left top corner of your EC2 dashboard, change whatever you have to "EU West (Ireland)". Let us know if it works, there might be something in your configuration that allows you to get further than I did.

I finally got in from work. It must be some sort of network problem due to my router at home. The NX client works like a charm to log into the Ubuntu GUI. It also worked with the Micro (Free) EC2 machine. I will try to do as much with the cheap one, and then transition to a faster virtual machine once I got a model working.
