Ok I've got Ubuntu (12.04 64-bit) installed and so far got OpenFoam and Paraview installed. What's my next play?
Alternatively, if it's easier, could you link me to a thread which is already covering this way of solving the problem.
Thanks,
Dan

When I started using CAElinux I downloaded it on my Dell notebook and wrote the ISO to a DVD using Roxio CD creator. I could then boot it to another Dell computer which sound like it has a similar hardware configuration to yours.
I then installed CAElinux to both a 16 Gbyte and 32Gbyte USB memory stick using
System -> Administration -> Startup Disk Creator
I was then able to run CAElinux from the USB stick. I have a recollection that I could not get something to work on a tutorial from there, but as I was a beginner (still am) it could be due to me. I also recollect seeing somewhere that unetbootin will not work for running CAElinux from a USB stick, but have not tried it.
I have a second hard drive for my notebook that I can put in the computer in place of the DVD drive. It is a dual boot system, and I am not sure how, but grub is installed on the removable drive. So to boot I press F12 while the BIOS goes through its algorithm and I get a one time boot menu. From there I boot from the hard drive in the storage bay, which gives me the grub menu. Then I select linux and all is fine. The really great thing is that if I remove the modular bay, windows does not complain. Or if I want to boot Windows, then it works the same as it used to.
I am very happy with this arrangement, especially so since I use two notebooks, and can have one in the Windows OS and the other in Linux.
I have on previous computers had CD ROMs that could not read some CD's while other computers could. You could have a CD drive where the laser alignment is on the borderline for being able to read or write properly. If this is the case then if you can borrow a computer to install CAElinux to the USB stick using the procedure above, then your problem will be solved.

In the end I just (happily) bit the bullet and bought a copy from these guys, arrived within 2 days and went off without a hitch. Absolutely rapid launch and equally fast installation. Looking forward to learning to use this stuff now.
