Installation into Oracle's VM was created by Gerrit Groot
Hi,

After having had problems installing CAE in VM, I tried installing CAE Linux in Oracle's VM. However, after having installed CAE linux, I get the message "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted."

The steps I followed are the following:
1 - Create a new virtual machine with 2048kB RAM and 20Gig HD in Oracle's VM
2 - Place CAE_Linux_2008.iso in its virtual CD tray (my computer is 32 bits, so I use the 2008 distribution)
3 - Start up my virtual machine from the Live CD, which works perfectly
4 - Install CAE Linux, wiping out the whole Hard Disk, overwriting any existing OS, data or whatsoever.
5 - Restarting my virtual machine taking out the CD (disconnecting the *.iso image file)

Now, in stead of a nice OS with CAE linux straight from my virtual HD, I get the message: "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted."

Am I doing something wrong? How can I get this to work?

Thank you,

Gerrit

Hi

It looks fine in my opinion... Normaly you should see a boot menu at this stage.

Did you try to enter in the bios of the virtual machine to check if the hard disk is in the list of bootable media?
Other question: which virtual machine profile did you choose for caelinux 2008? I think that Mandriva 32bit is a good choice for CAELinux 2008...

You are probably very close to the solution.

Good luck anyway

Hello
I have succeeded in installing CAElinux 2011 in Oracle's Virtualbox. I'm not sure that you are using Virtualbox the right way in setting up CAElinux as a virtualmachine. You should use the latest version of virtualbox. After you put in the RAM, virtual HDD drive space and so on, you should end up back in the virtualbox GUI. Then when you strat the virtualmachine at that pt you will asked to browse to where you have the .iso . Point to that place and click on the .iso file. Continue and CAElinux should boot up. You need to leave your .iso file in the same folder/place on your host PC. You shouldn't remove it from there; if CAElinux says "remove the .iso and restart" then restart but DO NOT remove the .iso. The removal is needed for actual physical computers and their bios systems. But here you have a virtual machine so it's a different situation.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

Thanks everybody for their help.

If you don't disconnect the iso file, your CAE Linux will start up, but since your first boot comes from the DVD you're running the LiveCD again, although virtually.

Anyway, I was just about to post that I solved it by installing Knoppix first. Knoppix boots perfectly from the virtual HD in the VM when you disconnect the iso file (I used ADRIANE-KNOPPIX_V6.2.1CD-2010-01-31-EN.iso)

I then installed CAE_Linux but in an existing partition (that was already made bootable by Knoppix) and CAE Linux now works even though I disconnect the CAE iso file.

My first impression is that CAE2008 doesn't format the HD as a bootable drive, though I'm not sure that I might have done something else wrong.

Hi everybody,

I am new in the Linux world and as a consequence in the CAELinux one.

I encountered exactly the same problem but as I am a beginner, I could not resolve the problem as it is explained here.

Would anybody help me by describing step by step the method ?

Thanks in advance.

Do you want to install CAE inside Oracle's VM?

Or just install CAE on a clean formatted computer?
