Duncan,

if You look for a commercial package writing for You the command-file, there is little choice. In my company we sell and write some translators, transfering mesh and analysis commands from commercial codes' format into Code-Aster format.

But nevertheless it is a good idea (and gives You a more complete use of Code-Aster) to learn the Code-Aster's command language.

Thanks for that. If I did every thing that I thought was a good idea I'd never get to sleep!

I work in an architects office, not with engineers. Originally I was going to use HEAT3 (www.buildingphysics.com/index-filer/Page691.htm) but it is neither GNU/OpenSource nor does it seem to be scalable up to importing a whole building. That's why I thought learning to use the tools in CAElinux could be good. I haven't given up yet though.

But you would like to perform thermal simulations?
You have to invest.
Nothing ever comes for free in this world.
Except of course CAELinux.

Interest: structural mechanics, solar energy (picture at 'my location' shows too little pv panels)
