CAELinux on Mac Book Pro was created by Metani
Hi all,

Did somebody ever tried to install CAELinux on a Mac Book Pro laptop ? I wonder if I could set a dual boot.

Any experience about this matter would be appreciable.

Cheers,
Amine

Why not run it in a virtual machine using VirtualBox?

Is your Mac new enough that it has Thunderbolt? I could not find any evidence that Thunderbolt is supported by even the newest version of Ubuntu. One post on this topic that I came across seemed to imply some issues with the Macbook Pro (which model I do not know). If you search on the Ubuntu forums you should be able to find whether or not Ubuntu 10.04 (on which CAELinux 2010 is based) works with your Mac.

hi all,

I'm new on caelinux and a new macbook pro user as well

I've downloaded caelinux2010, burned a live DVD and tried to boot the macbook pro from it

I had to select in "apple/preferences/boot disks" the option to boot from the DVD drive

it started OK (although no wireless comms working) and I was able to make a small meshing exercise using salome, excellent!

the problem was to restore my macbook to its normal state, it was hunged asking for a boot disc on the DVD drive everytime I tried to restart it

finally I learned the combination "restart while you hold the trackpad pressed" which initial function is to extract a rebel disc from the DVD drive; the disc went out and the machine rebooted normally in MacOS

my doubt/question:

I'm not confident enough about installing caelinux2010 on the macbook pro:

- first I should reboot from the liveDVD and then install caelinux2010 in the computer, then the problem of booting from DVD will reproduce...
- does the installation process allow to make an ubuntu partition without afecting Mac OS 10.6.8 ?
- once caelinux is installed, how do you make the macbook pro to boot choosing between MacOS or ubuntu?

any help will be appreciated, thank's a lot

hi all,

I've made some progression using caelinux 2010 in my macbook pro

I've have installed VirtualBox and created a virtual machine where I've installed caelinux 2010

it runs prety good, much better than executing it from the liveDVD, but there are some concerns I'd like to share in the forum, maybe someone has had the same troubles and found a solution

virtual screen resolution: it only offers two options (ubuntu window / system / preferences / monitors) 800x600 and 640x480

so that, when running caelinux 2010 through under VirtualBox it does'nt take advantage of the 1280x800 macbook pro's resolution

thank's for the comments you may post

Post edited by: Lluís Martínez Biscarri, at: 2011/10/07 13:38

Hello,

to have a good integration of any OS in virtualbox, you need also to install the so called Guest additions: these are drivers that allow for mouse integration, screen scaling and 3D acceleration.

See Virtualbox manual to learn how to install the guest additions, it should be quite simple.

Then you will get a nice desktop with native resolution and good display performance.

If virtualbox doesn't satisfy you, it should be possible to install CAELinux on a second partition (ie Bootcamp)... a friend of mine did it so it should work. To try that, look for 'install ubuntu on mac intel' in google and follow one of the guides you find

Best Regards

Joel
