Creating a bootable USB stick was created by Jake
I've downloaded the ISO image and tried various ways to make a bootable USB stick, but with no luck at all. I've tried Unetbootin, mkbt, Fedora Live USB creator, but none of them work. Has anyone successfully created a bootable USB stick from the CAElinux ISO?

neither will work because the sqfs file within the image is larger than 2 GB (limit for FAT16 file size, I believe). It should be possible to make a liveusb with EXTLINUX, but I haven't had any luck with it.

Hi,
I had managed to have a USB key version of CAELinux working (it was an older version, like 2007 at that time).
I used the procedure described here at that time:
www.pendrivelinux.com/all-in-one-usb-pclinuxos-minimezip/
It should still work with more recent versions...

Thanks much, I'll give it a try when I get home
Edit: Don't think it's going to work...the .bat file uses 7-zip to extract the files from the given .iso, and I already know for a fact that 7-zip won't open the CAELinux2008 iso image.

Post edited by: Jacob A, at: 2009/01/13 16:36

Yeah, doesn't work. It skips the part where 7-zip is supposed to extract the contents of the iso onto the thumb drive.

Ok maybe the 7zip part does not work.. but you can still extract teh content of the ISO with other tools; for example (in Windows) with Iso-buster...
For the link on pendrivelinux, I am not 100% sure that it is the procedure I used, I may have used an older version...; what I can remember is that is have used:
1) the HP utility to format and make a bootable usb
2) extract an copy the content of the ISO on the USB stik
3) install a new bootloader (isolinux if I remember, I used a small exe provided on pendrivelinux to install it)
4) adjust the configuration of the boot loader
Unfortunatelly, I cannot find this older tutorial now on pendrivelinux.
