CAELinux Kernel Panic was created by Matt Cook
Hi everyone,

I am new to CAELinux and am having some problems installing to hard drive. I have followed the instructions in the installation guide. However after the installation has been completed and the computer has rebooted, the Linux OS will not load properly. I have scanned the forums and found some people who are having similar problems, but I have seen no definitive solutions.

I am trying to dual boot CAELinux 2008 and Windows XP (Service Pack 2) on a computer with the following specs:
-Dell Inspiron 530
-Intel Pentium Dual Core Precessor E2160 @ 1.80GHz
-2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM @ 667MHz
-160GB SATA Hard Drive @ 7200RPM
-128MB nVIDIA GeForce 8300GS

I have pressed esc to enter verbose mode, and the following are the last lines displayed before the OS stops loading:
-Trying to resume from /dev/sda7
-Unable to access resume device (/dev/sda7)
-echo: cannot open /proc/suspend2/do_resume for write: 2
-Mounting root file system /dev/root
-mount: error 6 mounting ext3 flags defaults
-well, retrying without option flags
-mount: error 6 mounting ext3
-well, retrying read-only without any flags
-mount: error 6 mounting ext3
-switching to new root
-ERROR opening /dev/console!!!!:2
-unmounting old /proc
-unmounting old /sys
-switchroot: mount failed: 22
-Initrd finished
-Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init!

It is at this point that the load screen freezes. If restarted, the computer will still boot in Windows XP with no problems.

Any help, advice, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get this OS up and running.

-Matthew Cook

EDIT: I should mention that CAELinux runs from the liveDVD with no issues.<br /><br />Post edited by: Matt Cook, at: 2008/05/13 23:47

Hi,

I have noticed a strange issue with recent Dell systems (some recent Vostro systems) where actually the BIOS options are not the same when booting from DVD or booting from HDD. In fact, it seems that booting from the DVD, the disk controller has AHCI (also called RAID) mode enabled, which is fine for the latest Intel ICH8 or ICH9 disk controllers in Linux. But when rebooting from HDD, the AHCI/RAID mode is set back to disabled which is not a supported mode for the Linux kernel.

So try to enable the Disk controller's RAID/AHCI mode in the BIOS and to reboot from HDD. If it is the same issue that the one I have observed, this should be the solution.

By the way, it may happen that you Windows only boot if AHCI/RAID mode is disabled... to run Windows with AHCI/RAID enabled, you need to install the Intel Raid drivers for Windows. Note also that changing the AHCI mode does not destroy anything on the disk, you can simply change back to your previous settings in BIOS if this does not seem to solve the issue.

Good luck

Hello Joël,

Thank you very much for your help! I know have CAELinux up and running. There were some issues with running the windows with the raid drivers enabled. However, I found a very helpful guide here: forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=444831 which allowed me to enable RAID drivers without having to reinstall windows XP. It should work for P35 ICH9 based boards (it worked for me :P ).

Now that I have installed Linux, the learning process will begin and I expect that I will be returning to the forum with more questions.

Thanks again for your help.
Matt

Sorry for the double post, but I have a question regarding RAID mode. When I followed the steps to enable RAID, there was no option for AHCI. So currently I am running in RAID mode for both windows xp and Linux.

Here is where my question comes in. My understanding of RAID was that it is used with 2 hard drives and essentially, whatever is saved on the 'master' hard drive is redundantly copied to the backup hard drive.

I am only using RAID with one hard drive. So what is happening in this situation? Is my initial understanding of RAID incorrect? Or incomplete?

While switching to the RAID format has allowed me to dual boot windows and linux, I would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me as to what effects this has on the inner workings of my system.

Thanks in advance!

Matt
