Revised version of CAELinux? was created by John
Dear Admin

with all the custom software included in CAELinux being continuously developed and patched to correct pending issues, are there any plans for a revised version of CAELinux, or maybe a time-frame/schedule for the future?

Hello,

I am currently working on the new release including Salome-Meca 2008 (Salome v3.2.9 + Aster 9.2) and Code-Saturne 1.3.1 + other updates like Impact, Gerris and probably also Elmer. This version will have a new kernel (2.6.22.15) and updated applications and system components.

In general, I try to keep at least two major release per year maybe with some additionnal "patch" release. Usually the time of release is governed by :
1) a new version of one of the main package is out
2) a major system update / enhancement has been released
3) I can find enought time to do all the remastering work
...and usually, the constraint number 3 is the most problematic...

So, according to what I learned in the past two years of the project, I can now say that CAELinux will be updated twice a year around march and september approximatelly.

I hope that this will help you to plan your upgrades

Dear Joel

thank you for the input. It is useful to know when to expect a revised version. If I may, I would add something to the wish list...
Would it be possible to contact the OpenFOAM devels and gather all available corrective patches for the latest version in order to include a fully patched version? This is especially important for the mesh conversion utilities (...if they will not work, it would be troublesome to inter-operate with SALOME or GMSH or other...)

Thumbs up for the good work

Hi,

an "updated" version of caelinux may be helpful for users with newer machines. i have a laptop ith an intel 945 chipset which caused me some hours of work to get caelinux installed there.
i have posted a short howto. maybe you can provide a new version (new kernel) with the old software packages. this is a lot less work.

kindest regards
christian

Joel,

I remembered you mention one time about using Ubuntu instead of PCLinuxOs. Is this your plan of record for the next release?

BTW, I am experemting on using andLinux on my XP machine. I have able to run Salome_meca_2007 and OpenFOAM+paraview. The speed is usable enough. You migth want to try this insead of the VMWare version if you go to the Ubuntu way.

If you want to try you need to replace the Xming version that comes with andLinux with the one that is with Mesa version from Xming web site.
