Request: VirtualBox Image ?? was created by Nick J.
I've been running the VMWare version of CAELinux3a. I was wondering if it would be more in line with the spirit of CAELinux (open source software and all) to support the VirtualBox VM tool, rather than VMWare. Performance is supposedly equal (depending on reports it gets better or worse) and best of all, the basic version is released under the GPL. Unfortunately, there's no straightforward way to convert the VMWare VM to VirtualBox format. Has this consideration been addressed?

you are right VirtualBox is a really good alternative to VMWare and most interesting is that it is 80% in GPL (only few details like USB support is not GPLed).
I have been testing VirtualBox for a while and it is proabable that I will use it as a base for a future \"VirtualMachine\" version of CAELinux. But I was in quite a rush for the latest release so I kept VMWare for this time.

PS: I have seen that VirtualBox is also available on Mac OS X now.. which is not the case for VMWare Player. Another advantage of VirtualBox!!

Hi,
VirtualBox starts directly from the ISO image. You don't need a separate image.
I tested it a little, but in my opinion it is not as good as VMWare.

Virtual box works well with version 3a, with either the iso image or using the CD. For some reason 3b hangs right after the OS has loaded.

I haven't played with virtualbox much yet. How do you get it to run an Iso image? (apart from starting a really sparse OS within VB and running through an install from an actual dvd). as my system doesn't have a dvd player, I've typically been running straight from the VM version.

Setting up the Virtual Box, go to settings, CD/DVD ROM, select mount CD/DVD and ISO image file. Select the iso image, as downloaded. So it is enough to have the image on the HD.
