Post Processing with Visit was created by dmetzler
I was wondering if there's a way to make CA write its results files in VTK, Tecplot or Silo format so they can be post processed with Visit?

Hello,

for the moment CA can \"only\" write results to I-Deas, ENSIGHT, GMSH, MED files or in its own ASTER format.

But maybe you can use another program (maybe Paraview or mayaVI) which can read ENSIGHT format and are also based on VTK to convert files...

The latest version of Visit (1.4.5) has a plugin to read Ensight databases. What is the proper way to get CA to write its results in that format? I know for GMSH you had to add a new file type and unit number. Same procedure for Ensight format?

Hi,

the only thing you need to do is use the IMPR_RESU command with the option FORMAT=ENSIGHT and then it should be more or less the same as with GMSH.

The only main difference is that in ASTK you will need to add an entry (click the * button) in the file list with the type \"ensi\" (first drop-down list) and enter a name for the output directory (all the ENSIGHT files will be created in this directory).

I have not tested this yet, but it shouldn't be too difficult to do.

I got it to write Ensight files by following your suggestion with a tweak. The ./xxxx.ensi entry must refer to a directory (unit 0), since multiple files are written by the Ensight translator. The actual output unit number is 31. I haven't tested the output with Visit yet, since it's on the other machine.

Many thanks for your help!

Dave

I was able to postprocess a test model with Visit. You do have to create the *.case file by hand. This is a simple text file that tells Visit/Ensight what geo file to use and the names of the files containing scalar and vector results.

Thanks for your help.
