Update Ubuntu from caelinux13 was created by John Klein
After installing caelinux 13 I was unable to get a high resolution on the monitor despite hours of attempts and web searches. Caelinux was installed on a dell xps8700 windows 7, 64 bit machine with an nvidia Getz 745 graphics card.
I found in the software center that the latest version of Ubuntu was available and reading about it I saw it supposedly had better support for latest graphics cards so I upgraded.
Now my resolution is even worse. 800x600.
The terminal emulator does not work. When I try to open a terminal, it flashes open quickly and closes.
Also when I try to open freecad, I get a message saying no OpenGL.
I'm not sure how to proceed. Should I be trying to fix the upgraded Ubuntu, or should I abandon this and try to revert to a fresh install of caelinux 13 and fix that?

Have you tried installing the nVidia driver manually?

When I had CaeLinux installed, I had to boot with "nomodeset" added to startup for it to work. Later, I did add the NVidia driver from software update. So I removed "nomodeset" from boot. And rebooted and it did boot to desktop. When I looked at the NVidia driver in "Additional Drivers" it indicated it was activated but not in use. Also I'm not sure how to increase the resolution. The resolution was 1024x768. My graphic card and monitor are capable of much more. I think it does 1920x1080 under the Windows 7 partition.
Now I have another challenge. I took the bait and upgraded to the latest Ubuntu as prompted in Software Center. I thought that would fix my problem but actually it pretty much broke everything. I now boot up but several of apps such as terminal do not work and the resolution is now worse at 800x600. It did recognize though that I had an Nvidia card.
After I made the upgrade mistake, I saw on this forum advice not to upgrade the Ubuntu because of the failure of some of the CaeLunux software.
So, I guess I need to start from square one with a fresh install of CaeLinux and try to sort out the video issue. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I add my voice to this post because, waiting for the next version of Caelinux, it will beuseful to find a way to update caelinux (ubuntu) without broke the tools.
I've just tried to update, but some important tools were lost....
Any idea

Yes, you must figure out how to properly utilize you gfx card on ubuntu or any other distribution first, CAELinux is no different in that regards - only the bundled software.

The following worked for me. The situation is a bit different though. I wasn't able to setup dual monitors, and I didn't want to install a proprietary driver either. I was able to get things sorted out by installing the LTS Hardware Enablement Stack for 12.04. See the following link: wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack This updates the kernel, drivers, etc. up to 14.04. Maybe it can help you out.
As far as I can tell all of the software works after the update as it previously did.
Good luck.
p.s. I too am looking forward to getting the next CAELinux release. I know it is a time consuming task and the effort is appreciated! Curious to see the scripts to update the packages myself. My Linux aren't that advanced.
