release of CAELinux Beta 3a was created by Joël Cugnoni
Finally it is here !!
I have decided to release two version of CAELinux Beta 3:
the one released today called CAELinux beta 3a that is mainly a software package update (+additions) with the same good & old PCLinuxOs .92 base distribution (kernel 2.6.12)
a second version (3b) that will be released later and will consist in an OS-only update of CAELinux, with kernel 2.6.17 or 2.6.18 and a full upgrade of the system base (KDE, libs, gcc, python, etc...)
So what's new in the fresh CAELinux Beta 3a:
upgrades: Salome v3.2.1 & Aster STA8.3
additions: BRL-CAD, Blender, gCad3D, GraphiteOne
new tools & docs:
corrections:
My overall impression about CAELinux beta 3a is that it is a big step in the direction of stability and everydays usability, mainly because of the significant progresses of Salome v3.2.
I will let you judge by yourself, and remember, CAELinux is an OpenSource project, so if something is missing or could be improved, you are very welcome to contribute , and the simplest way of contributing is always to give a feedback (good or bad) !!
PS: thank you to all the contributors for their help, suggestions and pertinent remarks.
I have decided to release two version of CAELinux Beta 3:
So what's new in the fresh CAELinux Beta 3a:
- an English HTML version of the full documentation of Code-Aster is provided, with a simple keyword-based search GUI (automatic PDF=>HTML=>English translation... so not perfect at all, but better than nothing)
- contains new tools for FE mesh conversion from Salome UNV export to Elmer (modified UNV file), Calculix and OpenFOAM. Note that these tools are in an early stage of development and should be considered as starting point for further developments by the community.
- OpenFOAM v1.2 installation & scripts + unvToFoam
- Gerris: verified the solver (some examples using mpeg encoders still fail, but nothing to do with Gerris CFD solver)
- VMWare version now compatible with FAT32 partitions (virtual disk files split in 2GB parts)
My overall impression about CAELinux beta 3a is that it is a big step in the direction of stability and everydays usability, mainly because of the significant progresses of Salome v3.2.

Dear Admin:
Impressive work!
I downloaded the LiveDVD iso. When I tried to burn the image using k3b, it asked for a dual layer DVD disk. I only have standard DVD+R (single layer), so, I clicked \"force\" to force the burn. But, the bruned disk does not boot up. I may try to burn the disk again later using nero to see if I get the problem.
Also, when I tried to download the VMWare version, I got a permission denied.

Admin,
It wonderful to know that so many improvements have made it into CAELinux Beta 3a.
I have a suggestion. Could you make the source code available for the various enhancements that CAELinux offers that one cannot find eleswhere? By this I mean, for example the translator for Salome UNV to Calculix, Elmer, etc.
These and other patches are I presume, ones you have added for better functionality of CAELinux. Since I am running FC3, Breezy and Dapper (and I do not have a DVD bootable PC) I was wondering if I could get a hold of these snippets that would let me build my own set of programs. Thus I will be able to stick with my favorite flavors of Linux, without having to dedicate my PC to another flavor.
I am open to your thoughts and comments. Hope you see my request as a conduit to getting more people to use open source analysis tools.
Regards,
JMB

Hi, JMB,
If you go to the top menu of forum, then in Data Exchange, File Format section, you can find the converters from unv to Elmer, calculiX, and OpenFOAM. These converters were written in python.

Hello,
here are some answers to the previous questions:
1)JmB: I agree; a larger community is much more important than trying to keep things within a single distro. The small utilities are open source, and I will try to prepare a package to make them independant from CAELinux (it corresponds more or less to the /opt/helpers directory of beta 3a)
2) I am having some problems with uploading CAELinux Beta3a VMWare image on the download mirror... the file is greater than 2Gb.. and I think that the filesystem on the mirror server does not support more than 2Gb. So for the moment, VMWare edition is not available (file exists but not valid)
3) Concerning DVD burning: it must be an error of k3b, because the image does not need much space (1.8Gb) so standard DVD-R / +R is enough. I have burned several images with Nero on simple DVD+R and everything is OK.

Dear Admin:
I was able to download the VMWare version now.
Yes, I was able to burn the LiveDVD image using nero on a different computer. Burner may be the problem.
