Crashes during Salome was created by Ying wai Man
Hi,

I am not familiar with CFD and other programs in Caelinux, but my friend who is in this business uses Ansys showed me how it works. Unfortunately, when using Salome, it sometimes crashes, I don't know what happens, the PC just freezes even the pointer won't move. It happens after a 3D mesh is generated. This occurred two times within one hour, exactly after the mesh.

Offtopic: I have upgraded ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 10.10, does this effect Caelinux???

Yes, it's highly probabale that upgrading makes some programs missbehave, as they are compiled with libraries versions present in the 10.04 version but probably absent in 10.10. Try with smaller meshes and if the problem persists, try doing a small mesh in Live-DVD mode, so if the problems doesn't appear we can confirm updating is not a good practice.

Hi, thanks for your reply. The crashes appear before I updated to Ubuntu 10.10.

So, you tried again with the original 10.04 and still there's problem?
Ok, usually it can be caused by incorrect video driver settings. Find out which video card you have, even if it's built-in, and then check if the loaded driver is the one corresponding to your video card. Change the configuration if it's not matching. As I don't use Ubuntu, I don't know how to check and/or change the settings.
I suggest you to see which are the messages appearing in the terminal, perhaps it marked the error and becsue it freezes you couldn't bring to the front the shell again. Remember also that meshing is quite RAM hungry, specially for 3D meshes, so let the process work with the fewest programs opened at the same time. Linux is in general very resilient in this aspect, but some precaution is adviceable.

Drivers are compatible with Ubuntu 10.04/Caelinux 2010, Caelinux has Ubuntu as a basesystem. Before I upgraded to 10.10, my PC freezes after the 3d meshes. Maybe I just have to look on Ubuntu, or bring up the shell to find the problem.

Hi try to make sure that you have enough swap memory and ram: a 4Gb swap partition and at least 2Gb of RAM is a good bet

According to caelinux.com/CMS/index.php?option=com_jo...&catid=3#msg4751 ; a lack of swap may be the reason for Salome to hang or crash..

A bad GFX driver can also be the cause, but I not convinced that it is the case here.
