After nearly 5 years, we are proud to release finally a new stable version of CAELinux, named CAELinux 2018.

Highlights

This release is built on an updated Xubuntu 16.04.5 LTS  64 bit base and provides updated CAE software and GUI Wizards with a focus on the ease of use. As its predecessors, CAELinux 2018 covers the full cycle of a engineering and product development, from mathematical modeling, to CAD & CAE, to prototyping by 3D printing, CAM / g-code generation and even through electronic PCB design, software & micro controller programming.

CAELinux 2018 contains updated versions of the Salome_Meca 2018.1 and Code-Aster 13.4 FEA suite with MPI parallelism solvers, OpenFOAM 4.1.2 integrated with Helyx-OS GUI for settings up your CFD simulations , Code-Saturne 5.0.4 MPI with a simple wizard GUI and SarturneGUI to get started easily, Calculix 2.13 FEA version with CalculixLauncher GUI, ElmerFEM with high performance MPI solvers, the latest version of Freecad 0.17 parametric CAD modeler, PyCAM & Flatcam for 3D milling g-code generation with Camotics for milling simulation, Slic3r for easy and fast 3D printing g-code generation,  Kicad electric design suites with many tools for PCB isolation milling and finally the famous Arduino microcontroller development environment, as well as Python / Spyder, Octave, R, and C/C++/Fortran compilers.

Features

CAELinux 2018 LiveDVD

Requirements

CAELinux 2018 is only available for 64bit X86 processors (Intel/AMD). This LiveDVD distribution is highly compressed on the DVD and requires that the system decompresses all the necessary softwares into RAM in order to run. In LiveDVD mode, a minimum of 4Gb is recommended to use this distribution for simple analysis and hardware compatibility testing. For optimal performance it is recommended to install the distribution to hard disk. For professionnal use, 8Gb of RAM (or more) is recommended for simulations. An hard-disk installation of CAELinux 2018 requires at least a 25Gb for the root file system (50-70Gb recommended) and a 4Gb swap partition.

Procedure

  1. First, download the ISO image from the link below. Then you should check the md5sum of your downloaded file to check if it is not corrupt: in Linux, use the "md5sum" command in a console, in Windows, you should download the "md5sum.exe" command line utility from here.
  2. Burn the ISO image on a DVD with your favorite DVD burner software. Be sure to select the "Burn Image" option in your DVD burning software. If unsure, read the help of your DVD burning software. Alternativelly, you can install the LiveDVD on a USB key with the simple and efficient tool RUFUS available here:  http://rufus.ie
  3. Read the "Ubuntu Installation Manual " to learn how to install the distribution on hard disk. CAELinux 2018 needs at least 25Gb for its install, but a partition of 50Gb to 70Gb is recommended if you want to store additionnal data!
  4. Restart your PC, insert the LiveDVD (or USB key) and verify that your BIOS is configured to boot from CD/DVD drive (resp. USB external drive).
  5. Boot from the LiveDVD/USB: you will see a prompt, Press ENTER to boot with the default option (Live mode)
  6. When the XFCE desktop is finally loaded, you can start your work as if you were running from an hard disk. Note that all the readable partitions of your HDD will be allready accessible and your USB key or external HDD will be recognized when you plugin it in (read-write access).
  7. To see were to go next, open the "GettingStared" link on the desktop
  8. If you are happy with the distribution, you can then install it to hard disk. The installer can even resize Windows or Linux partitions to free up some space and install CAELinux in parallel to your existing OS.

Documentation

A quick start documentation is available in the GettingStart.html  & "Ubuntu Installation Manual " . Several tutorials, videos and examples are linked on the distribution and are accessible on the wiki
